How it all began
The foundation stone of the present-day business was laid in 1918 by Peter Gartner, a dealer in native products and taxi / transport contractor.
GARTNER has been recorded in the commercial register since 1946 when Josef Peter Gartner took over the small firm and developed it into a major national transport company. GARTNER mainly transported crude oil in tankers from oil-extracting areas in Upper Austria to the refinery in Vienna.
GARTNER became internationally active in the early fifties when a branch was established in Vienna. During the sixties Josef Peter GARTNER accompanied by his wife Irene GARTNER developed the international transport business extensively and from then on, GARTNER trucks were on the roads in all the major European countries.
The GARTNER sons, Peter, Klaus and Richard, joined the company in 1974 and 1977 respectively setting the pace for a new expansion trend.
The dawning of a new era
The entire fleet was equipped with MAN trucks and GARTNER entered the chemicals and food transport sector. The first refrigerated vehicles were acquired in 1980 and GARTNER became a brand name in the international transport business. “Just in time” was the GARTNER motto even then.
The corporate vision of the management was also revealed in 1982 when a branch office was established in Rosenheim Germany. The foundations for success in the European Union had thus been laid.
In 1989 a new administration building with its own truck service station was established at the headquarters in Lambach Upper Austria. GARTNER was already a leader in its field at this time. With the help of the most recent communication systems, a large number of vehicles were being efficiently directed all over Europe.
Rapid growth
This marked expansion also affected eastern markets and in 1991 the Hungarian subsidiary Gartner Intertrans Kft. was established in Zalaegerszeg.
The rapid upward trend demanded constant investment. In order to manage these investments effectively, the GHB Gartner Handels- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft m.b.H. (real estate management) and GBT Gartner Beteiligungs- und Transportgesellschaft m.b.H. (fleet management) were established.
Local presence has always been more than a simple slogan for GARTNER. To enable the company to be present on the customer’s site in the rapidly-growing German market, the firm Mertz in Kehl/Rhein was taken over in 1999. Since that date, our German network has been operating from its base in Kehl under the name of “Gartner Speditions GmbH”.
Investing heavily in the future
A new company headquarters was required to deal with the complex logistic demands brought about by our constant expansion. Work began in 1999 on the construction of the new logistics centre close to the previous company head office. This major investment was brought into operation at the end of 2002. In addition to the office complex, our Lambach terminal comprises shelving and handling storage areas to correspond to a wide range of customer requirements. The high rack warehouse is scanner managed and fully computer assisted. Our premises also house a large truck service station including a washing bay and a filling station, the company canteen, parking areas and naturally our rail terminal. With its own shuttle trains serving -Romania and Germany, GARTNER steps into the future.
Not only has the EU become larger, but GARTNER has also become stronger. GARTNER is able to respond to the different market conditions in the east from its base in the Czech RepublicThe firm Sindelar Spedition s.r.o. located in Netolice / Czech Republic was incorporated in 2005 in the Europe—wide Gartner Group. Our European network is supplemented by our own container terminal in Sindos/Thessaloniki as well as the Leible-Seifried Internationale Spedition und Transport GmbH in Kehl / Rhein acquired in 2007.
